June’s Donation Creation Pizza at the Wild Tomato Benefits War Vets at Door County’s Operation Welcome Homes

The Cheeseburger Pizza, was created in honor of USA veterans returning home from wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to a free vacation from Operation Welcome Homes.

In 2006 Don Rubin and his wife Barbara Weiner began building Operation Welcome Homes (OWH) and eventually launched it that year with the generous support of Door County’s hospitality providers, restaurants, theaters and shops – a program that has provided free vacations to more than 100 military families since Don and Barbara began it.

Each month the Wild Tomato in Fish Creek honors one specific local charity organization with a Donation Creation – an original, wood-fired, gourmet pizza recipe specially designed to benefit a select Door County non-profit organization. One dollar for each Donation Creation pizza sold goes to support that month’s local non-profit beneficiary.

When I ask Jenny at the Wild Tomato about this month’s Donation Creation pizza she replies, “It’s a Cheeseburger.” My puzzled look evokes a further explanation, “…it’s an all-American pizza recipe; Door County’s Narrowgate Farms grass-fed beef, bacon, cheddar cheese, Roma tomatoes and red onions all on a sesame-seed crust with a special spice and condiment sauce base. Once it emerges from the wood-fired oven, we top it off with fresh iceberg lettuce, french fries and a deep-fried pickle.”

You can enjoy this All-American Cheeseburger Pizza at the Wild Tomato or call 920.868.3095 for a carry-out. The small 12” pizza is $17.95 and the large 16” pizza is $21.95. All of the Wild Tomato pizzas are made to order with fresh hand-tossed dough.
